“The covid 19 pandemic taught a big lesson to the humanity. Long lock down periods, during 2020 and the lives lost gave us a feeling that how vulnerable a human life is. Unless we care for each other, and know common concerns of masses, there would not be a healthy society.”
During early 2021, as soon as lock down got over and live started to come back to normalcy, we happened to meet a Rotarian, Samir Kant Shamshery in a social event. He proposed the idea of a satellite club of a Rotary Club. He explained that a Satellite club can function independently, can have its own bye laws, can meet any time they want and use the name Rotary to do social service and be associated with a parent club for grooming and guidance.
With his guidance and support, we found the mentor in Rtn Manoj Thakur and Club president Kamal Jeet Singh Dhillon of Rotary Club of New Bombay Seaside to set up a satellite club.
In April 2021, the satellite club was formed inside NRI Complex, Seawoods Estates, Nerul Navi Mumbai. The name was given – Satellite Club @ NRI Complex, Rotary Club of New Bombay Seaside. Minimum 8 members were required to start a Satellite Club
Chartered Members were.
- Krishna K Kushwaha – Chairman
- Pabitra Chakraborty – Secretary
- K Mukund Raj - Member
- Rajkumar Pugalia
- Sanjay Bajaj
- Nirjhar Gupta
- Sushant Mehta
- Praveen Sethia
Year 2021 was the year when Covid Vaccine was made available and Govt announced the age groups, timelines, availability, and cost. There was a mad rush, anxiety, fear of aftereffects, choice of vaccine, availability, cost etc. But it became the phenomenon of so-called upper class of the society. The lower and middle class of the society were still unaware of availability and need for it.
As a Rotarian we felt the need of mass availability of vaccine so that everyone living inside the complex or nearby areas working as maid, driver, cook, cleaner, housekeeping staff, maintenance staff, security staff etc should get at least 1st dose of vaccine. In the first ever Vaccination camp held inside NRI Complex in association with Apollo Hospital could provide 800 vaccines as against the need of 6500 -7000 persons living or working.
The Rotary Club of satellite club @ NRI Complex arranged the second and third vaccination camp with help of Reliance Hospital Navi Mumbai inside the complex and outside the complex whereby end of October 2021, maximum people got at least first dose. The idea of creating a bio-bubble inside the NRI complex was achieved.
The satellite club also managed to get donations/contributions towards the cost of vaccine but gave it free to the needy. Seeing the selfless work done by 08 Rotarians, few more people got attracted to join the Satellite Club. Rtn Rekha Sankhla and Rtn Marc Sen were 2 new members.
During interaction on some Rotary event, IPDG Dr Mayuresh Warke, gave the idea and encouraged us to create a full-fledged club. One such interest meeting was held in April 2022 inside NRI Complex, Seawoods Estates, which was attended by 30+ persons. Same day we could get enough number to join us to create a New Club. All thanks to Rtn Manoj Thakur, Rtn Samir Shamshery and IPDG Dr Mayuresh who helped us in creating a new club.
A new club was chartered on 20 May 2022 and we gave the name – “Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai Flamingo City”. The name Flamingo was derived from the visibility and presence of Flamingos in nearby DPS lake. And we take pride in this name.
The Chartered President was Krishna K Kushwaha along with Club secretary Pabitra Chakraborty and club treasurer as Radheshyam Agrawal.
